confidence will be enough to keephis Runoffs winning streak going.
Then there are Charlie Campbelland Ken Kannard, also in fast Miatas, and they’ll be at or near the front.
Craig Chima and Ethen Shippert haveboth entered their Lotus Super 7s,but those front “wings” won’t helpon the straights. If they can stay inrange of the Japanese cars, they willhave an advantage in the twisty bits.
Steve Sargis has four pole positions, three wins, and a third at the Runoffsheld at Road America. He knowsthis course – and with a grandtotal of seven Runoffs titles, thereare few people who have been assuccessful at the Runoffs as he.
Sargis has been fast this year at St.Louis and Mid-Ohio on the long course, and at the June Sprints, Sargis won thefirst race (he didn’t finish the second).
Sargis prepares an excellent racecar, but it is British, so the quick guysbehind on the grid will hope it showsits British nature if Sargis runs away.
That said, Dan Meller has won an HPchampionship Road America with hisHonda CRX (although this year he’ll bewheeling a Datsun 210 instead), andChris Schaafsma finished second at Indyand has a VW sporting plenty of grunt.
And there are plenty of others whocould win this one. Vesa Silegren, lastyear’s champion at VIR, is fast, and VIRis a track not unlike Road America. GregGauper has had a win and four othertop-five finishes at the Runoffs at RoadAmerica, so he’ll be in the mix, too.
What is certain about this raceis that Sargis will be fast – butso will everyone else.
Runoffs: “Well after being picked
last year, and how everything has
gone since then, my initial reaction
is ‘Don’t you put that evil on me!’”
Ruck’s mechanical luck has been
horrible for a year and a half, but
we have little doubt everything will
come together in time for this year’s
Runoffs. Recently, he reports, “We
finally had a good event at Mid-Ohio
with a quick car that was fun to drive
and well behaved. It felt both odd and
hugely refreshing. A nice reminder
of how fun this is supposed to be.”
He is feeling more confident withhis dog-box transmission and plansto do some laps at Road Americabefore the Runoffs. If his car is onsong, he’ll be fast – and he’ll needto be because he’ll have a couplevery fast Miatas on his tail.
Neither Eric Prill nor SamHenry have had great luck at RoadAmerica, but both have shown howcompetitive they can be at this longtrack. Prill’s returning to this trackwith a pair of Runoffs titles to hisname, so maybe that extra bit of
