Chairing the Tire Rack Solo National Championships is not for the weak.
Truly, a solid organizational background plusdeep levels of competition understandingand detailed event administration savvy areall necessary if you’re to succeed in hostingSCCA’s largest autocross of the year. Thesewarnings are fine and dandy, but what isit really like to chair an event as massiveas the Solo National Championships? Tofind out, we asked someone who had.
Scott Dobler, who is approachinghis third year as a co-chair of the SoloNationals, started his SCCA career as atoddler attending events with his father.
Later, he competed in autocross eventsin the south, but with a busy family life hewas not able to attend the Solo NationalChampionships until 2014. By then, hehad already become a local organizer, working as Regional Executive for someyears and serving on the chief’s team andas chair of ProSolos in his local Region.
It turns out, Dobler has actually beenon the Chiefs Team at every Solo Nationalshe has attended. As a freelance graphicdesigner, he has created the covers forvarious SCCA publications and logos formultiple events starting with the 2014
Solo National Championships and everySolo Nationals since. He is currentlythe SCCA National Coordinator forthe Tire Rack Street Survival program, working with other coordinators fromorganizations such as BMWCCA and PCA.
Dobler’s partner in crime is Jeff Cox.
Their first year as co-chairs was 2018, whichwas also the year that saw an unfortunateconfluence of extended entry caps andan angry Mother Nature. The problemsencountered that year were certainly notthe fault of the event chairs and, as such, both were asked to return to their co-chairroles for the 2019 and 2020 Solo Nationals.
When he was asked to take on themonumental task of chairing the SoloNational Championships, Dobler made twophone calls – one to Cox and the other toTracy Lewis. He needed Cox to do morethan half of the work, and he needed Lewis’experience and support as Chief of Workers.
With those two on board, Dobler says, therest of the Chiefs Team could continue onwith its usual worker evolution as longtimemembers bring new blood on board.
